Where a new vintage begins
At the end of every summer, Cariñena celebrates one of the most important moments in its calendar: The Harvest Festival. Since 1960, the Harvest Festival has brought together the 16 municipalities of the D.O.P. Cariñena to celebrate the start of a new vintage and honour a tradition that lies at the heart of this wine-growing region.
For three days, locals and visitors come together to enjoy a celebration that blends wine, culture, gastronomy and heritage around one of Cariñena’s most iconic landmarks: the Fuente de la Mora.
The first must of the year
At the end of every summer, Cariñena celebrates one of the most important moments in its calendar: The Harvest Festival.
When the fountain flows with wine
Following the grape-treading comes the most anticipated moment of the celebration: the activation of the Fuente de la Mora.
Wine begins to flow from its spouts instead of water, reviving a tradition that dates back to the 16th century, when the people of Cariñena welcomed King Philip II in this very way during his visit to the town.
Throughout the day, the fountain becomes the heart of the festival and one of the most distinctive and memorable images in the world of wine.
Leaving a mark on Cariñena
Since 2007, the Harvest Festival has welcomed a special guest who takes part in the opening celebrations.
After the grape-treading ceremony, this guest joins the President of D.O.P. Cariñena in activating the Fuente de la Mora. They then leave their handprint on Cariñena’s Walk of Fame, a distinction reserved for individuals who have helped promote the name of Cariñena and its appellation beyond its borders.
More than a festival
The celebrations continue throughout the weekend with live music, cultural activities, entertainment and events for all ages.
The Wine Fair brings together the wineries of the appellation, offering visitors the opportunity to discover D.O.P. Cariñena wines alongside some of the finest local cuisine, transforming the streets of Cariñena into a vibrant showcase of the region’s flavours and traditions.
A nationally recognised celebration
In 2025, coinciding with Cariñena’s designation as European City of Wine, the Harvest Festival was awarded the status of Festival of National Tourist Interest by the Spanish Government.
This recognition builds on its earlier designation as a Festival of Tourist Interest of Aragón in 2016 and confirms its place as one of the region’s most important celebrations, preserving its traditions while continuing to evolve and bring wine culture closer to new generations.
